Default 2000 golf vr6 2.8 manual

I am looking at buying a 2000 golf vr6 12v 2.8 for $500. Okay so heres the issue with it.

The guy took the car to get a clutch job, new clutch flywheel, throw out bearing, slave cylinder. He said everything but the fork. He said the car never shifted right after the he got the car back and when the car would get warm it wouldnt shift at all. As time passed the car got harder and harder to engage in gear and now, no longer goes into gear at all. He said he has reblees the slave cylinder diligently and the car will go into reverse if the car is off.
Any ideas what the issue could be? What could have been installed wrong, or maybe something didnt get torqued? Is it wprth buyong or should i walk away from it.
