Default 2000 1.6 L Golf Interference or non-interference?

Hi my timing belt just went on my golf and I can't find whether it has an interference engine or not. I was told by a mechanic that if there are bent valves it will cost my around £800 to fix and to be honest I can buy a used engine and have it put in for less than that. Does anyone know the answer to this???

Well, is a hard guess... You could try replacing the timing belt and getting it on time. Then, try starting it. if it doesn't, then you have bent valves.
hope this helps
