Default control pressure regulator

As a follow up to my post about my cabriolet not running. Now will run after bleeding the lines but as soon as the radiator fan turns on when the engine is hot the regulator gets hot and the engine quits. As soon as I pour water on the regulator attached to the block next to the distributor and get it cooled down the engine runs and purrs again until the fan blows hot air onto it and heats it up again. So for sure the regulator is bad but why would getting it hot make it not work? Robert
