Question 1987 Cabrio won't start - First time VW owner

Just picked up a 1987 Cabriolet, and have owned it for about 3 days, and having trouble figuring why it won't start. Picked up the car and it ran and drove great, started perfectly the first time, but as we turned it off an on for the afternoon would take longer to start the more we shut it on and off. Took it around town a little, then proceeded on the journey back home, about two hours away. Got through the first hour and a half perfectly and had probably put 100 miles on it when the car started to bog down and lost most of its power, but was still running. About five miles before that, the battery and OXS light came on together, but the car continued to run fine at that point, so we continued till it bogged down. Pulled to the side of the road where the car continued to idle, but very roughly. It sounded healthy when revving, and stayed running for about 10 minuets while we tried to figure out the problem, went to rev it again, this time only to about 2k rpm, and it immediately shut off and would not start or crank. The battery has power, but it looses a lot of amps when trying to crank. Car has fuel pressure as well, so not really sure where to go from here. Also though it could be a grounding issue, but Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How long is a piece of string?

Check all the basics as it got a good spark at the spark plugs and is it getting fuel.

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing and check systems out.
