Someone Please Tell Me How!!

I was looking to change the shifter **** and came to the realization that I had not the slightest idea on how to. Do you have to take out the surrounding case or does the **** just come out??? Thanks

well if it's the same as in the Jetta, it's a pain. I had to used vice grips and a lot of other 'finess' tio get it to screw off.
