Default Someone help! I have never seen this before

I own a 2000 beetle and today I went out driving and it felt perfectly fine. When I got home I parked it like normal. I then turned off the lights, and shut the car off. I noticed the lights never shut off. So I then tried to start the car and it wouldn't start. The engine wouldn't turn over, it wouldn't do anything. I removed the negative on the battery hoping it would reset but when I placed it back on the terminal the lights came back on and it still wouldn't start. If anyone has had this problem please let me know what I have to do to fix it.

Did you ever get that fixed? Sounds like a bad ignition switch to me.
