Default RE: Gas Milage

Your 73 beetle was designed to use 91octane leaded fuel. No
such thing anymore. The gasoline we have today is totally different
from what we had in 73. It's a wonder they run on todays gas at
all. The old stuff would get around 29 mpg if you drove correct.
I hear how great gas is today compared to yesteryear, those people have no idea what they are talking about. Today's gas is
for clean burning and the environment, not for the car or mileage.
The easiest way to gain fuel mileage is use a narrow radial tire
for less rolling resistance. Increase the compression a little to get
more power from the fuel burned, ( doesn't mean hop up the eng )
use the 87 octane fuel if it will run on it. the higher the octane
rating for todays gas the more cleaner ( form of alcohol ) it contains, alcohol gets about 1/2 the mileage as gasoline. The only
additive I know of that will increase a little is Acetone, but you have to be very careful with it. too much and the mileage goes down. The ratio is 1 1/2 oz acetone to 20 gal of gasoline, and it
must be measured correct, if you use this it will be at your own
decision, I've used it for years with only good results, You must
remember if you use it and have a 1/2 tank of gas and refill, it
does not call for the full amount of acetone again, it would be only
1/2 the amount. You can purchase acetone at hardware stores in
the paint section. use glass measuring containers, plastic will melt.
and don't get it on the car paint.
