Default can't align spark plug

Hi All, I was doing the maintenance on my '71 super, changing the plugs. I got the old ones off and the new ones on uneventfully, that is except for cyl NO.1 (closest to front of car on right). The old plug came out fine, but now after hours of trying to get the new one in, I have had no luck. I have tried using the socket as a guide, and arubber hoseas a guide. I can easily get my hands on it, and spin it freely within the hole. There was no trauma in removing the old plug, and I have seen no metal shavings. If you have any ideas, suggestions or anything to share about this, it'll be appreciated.
Thanks, Dave
