Default 99 Beetle keeps dying sometimes backfires

Uncle Buck is in town! Holy Moly my bug died again yesterday. When I went to try to start it back up, I had to try about three times before it turned over and kept running. However it backfired loud! Then ran fine, at least long enough to run a couple errands then get back home. It dies all the time while driving. Sometimes won't start back up until it sits for a while, sometimes it will start again after a couple tries. I've replaced the camshaft sensor, O2 sensor (just one) fuel pump and had a complete service a couple months ago. It's manual tranny with about 150k miles. When it runs though, it runs really good, but then it just stalls out sometimes you don't even realize it until there is no power to the pedal! Ugh, frustrated! It also ever since I've had it, screeches sometimes when I start it. Mechanic says starter may be going, but this has been "going" for a couple years apparently. Sometimes the check engine light is on and the coolant light, but the resevoir is full. Help?

Welcome to the forum.

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing.

I Still Don't Know The Engine Code Since It's Been At The Mechanic All Week... Replaced Both O2 Sensors, Fuel Pump, Cam Sensor, Filters, Crank Sensor?, And Cleaned The Throttle Body. Still Not Fixed. Next Stop Is A Cliff I Think.

If he's replaced those components and it still doesn't run. Find a mechanic who knows what he's doing, who has VAG-COM/VCDS.

The screeches sometimes when it starts sound like the auxiliary drive belt (fan belt) slipping.

You don't say where you live?
