Default '69 Bug Engine problem

I've got a '69 Bug with a stock (I think) engine. It belonged to my wife's uncle who recently passed away. The car has sat for about 4yrs.

Prior to starting it, I changed the oil, air & gas filter, points, plugs, adj the valves, installed a new btry and put in gas (tank was dry).

Turned the ignition and started the motor. The car drove well around 25-35mph. Got up over 40mph and engine started losing power and smoking (billowed from under car) very badly. At idle, oil pressue light came on... would go out with slight increase in rpm. Shut engine off, checked oil... engine and dipstick were extremely hot... oil level was ok. Detected smoke coming out of air filter.

Would welcome advice/comments/suggestions... is engine toast or what?

Rebuild or replace?

Thanks for your help.

Chuck

First I would start by checking/replacing the oil pump, replace the pump with a higher volume pump. Getting that engine that hot may have weakend it but I would start swith the oil pump.

reach behind the genorator (with car off) and check the fan for blockage
is the fan belt on
sounds like you have an air flow problem might have mice nesting in it and have blocked the air off some where
might be on top of cylinders
