65 Beetle Drive Belt Broke!
I purchased a '65 beetle yesterday and on my way home the drive belt broke! I stopped the car immediately and replaced it, however, the engine got hot - it was smoking!
Afterwards I could not get much power our of the car - I could only get up to about 40mph tops! I'm new to the air-cooled engines. Can you help me with what I should start checking to find the problem? Thanks,
Harin

RE: 65 Beetle Drive Belt Broke!
OK, when I removed the valve covers one of the valve springs was stuck down. When I would pop it back and rotate the engine by hand it would get stuck again. So when I removed the rocker arms I just turned the spring a few times and now that problem seems to be gone.
I tightened the head bolts to 23 ft-Lbs but the engine still has no power. I'm not burning oil or leaking oil which I think is a good thing but I'm not sure what to do next.
Any ideas?
thanks!

Today I figured out that the #3 cylinder is not firing. This is the same one that I had the stuck valve-spring on. The spark plug had oil on it when I removed it. I'm guessing it's a leaky valve stem seal? But is that enough to cause the cylinder to not fire at all?
What else should I check before removing the head? Can I remove the head while the engine is still in the car?
thanks!
