Default Hard to start

Hey guys I have a small problem with my 1984 rabbit. When You turn the key you are supposed to hear the pump hum for about 3 to 5 seconds aren't you? Because I actually have to turn the key to where the stater engages before I hear the pump go on! When the car sits for a long time and I go to start it I have to turn the engine over for a good 7 to ten seconds before it starts and when it does finally start it runs really rough for about 5min until it warms up. Could it be a bad fuel pump relay? I'd really appreciate a answer on this as soon as possible because I need to get this on the road
Thanxs alot ahead of time for any help you can offer me!!

Hey I have the same problems, I have hundreds of members and 3-4 post. Anyways, doesn't sound like a bad fuel relay, more like dirty injectors. Gotta undersdtand it's an old car, old motor. The pump might be going out, but yea the pump is suppose to come on right when you turn the key. If it doesn't then either the pump might going, or something else. As far as the car running rough, I lgo out of town with the Military, and after a month or so I come home and the car runs a little rough at first. I always throw some fuel injector cleaner in and some fuel additive to clean the fuel system, and I have a 2000. Kinda sounds like a combo of things, but when was the last time anything was done with the fuel system as far as cleaning, or even a tune up. Change the fuel filter, that prolly hasn't been done in awhile.

First, thankyou for replying I appreciate it! Also I'm assuming you are in the military? THANKYOU for fighting for our freedom!!
I have done a tune up (plugs, wires, rotor, cap) I've also put seafoam in my gas tank to hopefully help the rough idling to no avail. Iknow the motor was worked onbefore because whenI changed my valve covergasket the cam looked like it was brand new(itdidn't have that brown tint to it) I'm pretty sure the head was swapped. The fuel fiter "looks'like it was just installedrecently. Any way of checking it? Thanxs for the help!!
