Default Intro & question for an expert

Hi Folks,

I have posted before about an issue - which I still have - but hadn't read the rules so will try and do it properly this time. I'm from Belfast, NI. I do love VWs, I had a 6 speed MK IV Golf a while back and I loved it. Cost 900 quid and it went for years. So I gathered up a few grand and decided to get a Jetta, which was a lovely motor but it had the smaller engine and it was not a flying machine, but very well turned out inside and a great wee car. Then I got T boned by a fella who didn't see me somehow, and the car was a write off. I then bought my current motor which has been giving me some problems. It's an 09 Highline Passat, really nice car, I love it, got less than 100k genuine miles on it. So when I bought it the dealer said he would do a service but just an oil change, no filters. I wanted the car so I said go ahead. Then I noticed she was smoking when idle, and running rough. Got my mechanic to cast an eye over her (he's a VW mechanic who used to work in one of the main garages but I trust him), and he told me yer man who sold me the car hadn't drained the oil, just filled her on up and there was a litre too much oil in it. He drained it, and I had the exhaust fixed. She was then running well for a while, til I went on holidays for 2 weeks.

Came back and she was smoking like mad again, at idle. She was full of diesel at the time so I drove it and after a couple of weeks needed a refill. Stuck fresh diesel in and the smoke went away. So I thought maybe the fuel tank has a lot of dirt in it or something. Drove her til the light came on, and voila, smoke came back. Filled her up and it went away. So I'm thinking I've cracked it. Then the light came on there a week or so ago and I thought if it goes away with this fill, I'll be pretty damn sure the issue is the fuel tank. Nope. The smoke is not going away this time, not immediately anyway. But I have noticed something strange, when I start the car (even after I switch it off at the lights to stop the smoke at idle) it doesn't smoke. The revs drop down to 750 when the car is at rest. However if I try to drive and go over 1200 revs or so, when I come to a halt it drops to 900 revs and smokes. Turn it off and on again. 750 revs and no smoke. And it'll stay like that, I can start her and leave her ticking over and it'll run like a watch. Soon as I try and drive anyway (over 1200 revs or so) it smokes. If I keep it under 100 revs when driving, which is obviously impossible near enough, it won't smoke.

I know it's a long shot but does anyone have any idea what may be causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
