Default Transmission Swap Between Models

I have a 1986 Cabriolet, and the automatic transmission just failed. I've done transmission swaps on other vehicles and I would like to try my hand on the VW. I am wondering which models/years of cars have compatible transmissions and if there are any other parts that must be replaced when removing the transmission. Thanks a lot!

Default RE: Transmission Swap Between Models

sounds like fun. while you are at the junkyard buying your used trans or even just getting a price over the phone ask them what other models fit your car. any reputable place will tell you what you want/need to know. drain tranns cooler oil too while you are at it , all new fluids go back into trans.check trans axle boots and replace any cut or worn covers now, look at the starter for wear. flywheel for wear check for oil leaks on the engine that are easier to reach and fix whiile trans isnt in the way.
