Default stereo problems

i know this isnt really a mechanical problem, or even one specific to VW but i just bought a 1999.5 jetta, and the dealer was my friends brother who just started his dealership, and he totally f#@%($ me. i traded my busted up toyota 4runner for the jetta, and paid $1000 dollars towards it to get all the work done to make it perfect... 3 months later i get a busted up piece of ****. i gave him my 300 dollar pioneer stereo attatched to my car, and got an empty slot where my stereo should be in the jetta. he said he would buy me a new stereo, and eventually he had his friend rig up a used piece of **** that i have as my stereo in my beater car.... ANY WAY

this is the problem-- when iturn the volume up past a certain volume (in this case past 9) the whole left side of the car makes a crackling noise...its completely different than a blown speaker noise... and when i pushed on the face plate of the stereo, the noise stopped... after a while it would knock loose and i would push up against it again and the noise would stop until one day it wouldnt stop. i took the stereo out of the dash to look at the wiring because i thought maybe i was pushing some sort of connection back together to stop the noise. the wires were a MESS. there were 2 12V wires just dangling there all spliced and everything, and all the connections were done by cutting the wires and taping them together.. it was rediculous. i messed witht he wires and couldnt get the noise to stop. i took it to a stereo store, and they looked at it and didnt know what the hell they were talking about, 1st they said the speaker was blown, then i told them it was the whole left side of the car and i could stop it by pushing the stereo at one point, then they told me i needed a whole new stereo, and something inside the stereo was doing it... i think this is just a scheme to get me to spend at least 150 dollars on the stereo then 150 for them to install it.. in their installation process they would obvoiously re-wire the stereo professionaly and probably fix the problem and say "see it was the stereo" i would much rather figure out the problem than spend 300 dollars if it might be a wiring issue.

sorry for the long explination and that i cant explain the noise by typing... but if anyone knows what this might be, then please help

ALSO they said if it has a Monsoon(spelling) stock system, they would need to bypass the amp but it doesnt have that so that isnt the problem
thanks for your help

i bought a new stereo, and the wiring harness and stuff, now i need to install it. i dont know if it is a bad idea to do it myself... i mean all it is is matching wire colors right? if anyone thinks i should stop before i screw everything up let me know, and if it is easy to do, let me know that also.
