OBD2 Scanner

OBD2 Scanner
Anyone have any recommendations on buying a scanner for a 2002 golf TDI to read and clear codes? I realize you get what you pay for, but I'm looking for a fairly inexpensive brand that works well, as I'm not a professional mechanic I don't need a thousand dollar snap-on. Send me your recommendations,
Thanks,
Shawn

RE: OBD2 Scanner
you should be able to buy one for 50 or 60 bucks that will let you read and erase the codes. If you're from Canada let me know and I'll tell you where you can get them. You can also buy them on ebay, but you take your chances with the honesty of the seller. Keep in mind that the majority if not all of the cheaper code readers will not let you reset your abs or airbag warning light.

My airbag light is on as well after fixing a broken wire on trunk release. VW beetle convertible 2005. I've tried to reset with a scanner from local auto parts store. No codes in memory, but can't turn off light. Does it take a special tool and/or a more expensive scanner?

There are loads of EOBD II or OBD2 scanners on the market, as said you get what you pay for so read the spec before buying.
The best tool you can buy of a VAG vehicle is VCDS. They aren't cheap even though you will see the cheap Chinese cloned cables of fleabay.
If you just want to read and clear any error codes then these cheap scanners should work. Then you use my https://volkswagenforum.com/forum/ge...oftware-34973/ to see what they mean.
Glens - some codes can't be cleared easily thats where the VCDS comes in as it isn't just a scanner it tests components as well.

Thanks Keith. From what I've been reading about scanners, VW also requires CAN support and some other protocol besides OBDII. that's probably why I can't clear these fault lights huh?
I will create my signature. Thanks for your quick reply.

I got a cheap U281 CAN VW/Audi scanner and I'm getting DTC codes 02511 and 01578. Neither of these is in their guide. I saw another post that says 02511 is a seat occupancy detector. Anyone know what 01578 means? When I try to clear the codes I get the message "Protocol KWP2000" which is not mentioned in there manual either. Any ideas?
Thanks
