I have a 2001 VW Golf and within the past two week I've noticed a grinding/creaking noise when the car is coasting (say to a red light or stop sign). The noise doesn't happen everytime I drive but when it does I've noticed that it stops immediately if I accelerate or if I hit the brakes. The noise only lasts maybe 2-3 seconds each time I've heard it.

I just had my car at the shop and mentioned this but of course it never happened while the technician had it.

Any ideas?
