Default Changing trans fluid in DSG trans

I'm trying to change the trans fluid in my 2006 Jetta TDI DSG and I see in the factory service manual that I need a scan tool so that I can read the trans temp during the refilling stage. Is there a work around for this? It says the trans needs to get to 95-113F, and to let the excess fluid drain out. Can I just feel the trans and make sure it's warm or something like that?

Not sure how much a scan tool costs but am trying to avoid buying one unless really needed.

Also, the manual says I need an adapter to screw into the drain plug hole and a filler hose (VAS 6262) to pump fluid out of containers into the trans. It looks like there is no way around getting these two items unless someone else has figured a workaround?

Thanks in advance for the help. Dealer wants $400 to do this job and I'm not ready to pay that unless it is really beyond my capabilities.

Dan
