Default 1700cc Flat Fan Housing

I'm building a trike from a 911/914 1972 1700cc flat engine. The fan Housing is located on the front of the engine. It looks bulky and ugly (in my opinion) my question is do I have to have this fan housing without converting it to and upright housing? I'm having a dificulty even finding parts for this housing, such as the alternator cover abd brackets. Seeing that this engine is going to be completly open to the elements, should that not be suficent for cooling?

Thanks for any suggestion or information.
