Default Thermostat housing replacement

Hello there, I have a '95 vr6 passat glx wagon that's needs the thermostat housing replaced and I can't see how it is replaced. Is it done from under the car only or is there a way to change it by removing part of the engine above to gain access? I tried to look at repair manuals at the local part stores like pep boys, autozone, strauss, etc. but I could never find the book for vr6's. Should anyone have the manual, could you scan the pages and send it to me, please. Thanks jfdfromnyc@aol.com

If you haven't received any info on this yet, check behind the motor. Can you see it all? There should a tee coming off the housing that also goes to the heater core.
