temp gauge stopped working

You don't say with model it is petrol or diesel?
It could be the sensor the simple test is remove engine temp sensor plug and use a paper clip to bridge both connectors together and with ignition on the temp gauge should go full sweep to hot if it does then replace it with a new sensor.
