hello, I'm new to the forums and have to ask about a new car well used new to me.
I am interested in a 1999 Passat with 136000 miles the engine is turbo charged and the noise i hear seems to be a turbo whine can someone reassure me that the turbo is fine and should make noise or are these supposed to be quite?
or is there anything else i should know about with this type of car?

It does make kind of a whine but, it shouldn't be whining abnormally loud. It's hard to tell you what it should sound like over the internet.

 

When I test drove the car it did not make any noise until I stepped on it from about 30-60mph and it sounded more like a steady whistle

 

That sounds normal. That is the beautiful sound of a turbo.
