Default New used 2002 Passat

Bought my first non Big Three vehicle two weeks ago. 2002 GLX Passat-125,000 miles. Usually do most general work myself. I have had 7 different Eldos, 1998 being current so I am not too afraid of anything not major. I was going to change the tranny fluid and filter until I found out the supposed process. Too much on my back in a limited space and no high tech tools. I had it done by a recommended import guy. It had never been changed, showed me the date on the original filter,2002. I did change the oil and it was down over two quarts. 5w30 synthetic. Started to smell oil. Two different mechanics both said the valve covers were leaking. How big a job is this? This is the 2.8

I wish other users would do the same, anyone would think I'm asking for their bank details.

Actually, he is right here but no matter you can fix this problem. And, one thing is sure I am here that main problem is with valve which is creating leak problem. So, first of all fix it properly.
