'98 Passat won't start. Alarm sounds when key turns.
Hello all. I am new to this forum.
I've owned my '98 Passat 1.8 turbo for over 20 years. Last week I parked it at home and attempted to remote lock it with keyfob but it wouldn't. Nothing at all, as if the keyfob died. I could still start and drive it but not lock it.
I also couldnt use the key to lock it because the lock cylinder was broken (for some time but never stopped me before). I have been relying on the keyfob alone to lock unlock and set alarm.
I got new batteries for the keyfob but still nothing. I got the smart idea that I could reset things by disconnecting the battery for a minute. That didn't work and now, when I turn the key in the ignition, the alarm goes off and car will not start. Also, hood release sets off alarm. Tried holding battery cables together for 2 minutes, no help.
I ordered new lock cylinder repair kits coming on 5/15.
My mechanic came over and plugged in diagnostic unit but got no code. Battery has 12volts. Fuses #6 and #14 are good. (There is no #10 fuse, never was.)
he says it is not immobilizer, no light indicating on dash.
HELP.
Does anyone have a clue? Some module or microswitch suddenly fail.
I'm fortunate that I just replaced the engine in my 2002 Golf GL 2.0 and have a car to drive.
need assistance or insight from folks like you in this forum.
Th This is the lock cylinder, same for driver and passenger side. Will be fixed soon. She runs real good for 25 years old, 190,000 miles.
