Default 97 passat stalling

I have a 97 passat 5 speed im new to vw's and this problem just started happening. Ill be drving along and all of a sudden my rpm's will drop to 0 and my car will just turn off. I try to turn it over and it sounds like its going to turn over but nothing. I wait 10 to fifteen minutes open the hood and it just starts just fine. Can anyone explain what this may be ??

yes, the check engine light came on. Im going to have it looked at today. one thing i noticed as i was driving home from work was that right before it stalled i heard a couple of clicks. after it stalled i lifted up my hood for about 15 mintues sat and waited and it started up again just fine.
