Default '94 Passat - worrying noises

Hi there. A few days ago, out of the blue, my trusty old Passat started making a rhythmic kind of whistling noise. It seems to be coming from the general timing belt region.

Also, yesterday I turned a sharp corner to get onto the motorway and a buzzing sound started up. It persists whether the engine is in gear or neutral but gets louder and more high pitched the faster I go. Seems to maybe be a wind thing? It's coming from the rear of the vehicle, seemingly from the general area of the rear driver's wheel. The car runs fine, but the noise is worrying - it gets audible as a low hum at about 30mph then gets higher and louder as you speed up. It sounds a lot like the noise you get when you're in too low a gear, but it happens whether I'm in gear or not and it's coming from behind me.

If anybody has any ideas on either of these I would be hugely grateful for your input.

Thankyou kindly.
