Default 2000 passat wagon brake fluid warning

In Oct 2009, I got the infamous STOP warning with regard to my brake fluid levels, and I dutifully took my car in to have some brake fluid put in (but not to the dealer).

I was thinking it might be a little thing. Not.

They told me I had a torn axel boot and had to replace the right side axel (and service the cooling system). Bummer.

$550 and a mere 8 months later, I just got the STOP brake fluid warning AGAIN. But now I'm scared to take it in for fear of what they'll "find" this time.

Has anyone else had trouble with their brake fluid levels? Should I find different service people or, god forbid, go to the dealer?
