Default Whining Noise

Hi guys, I have a Jetta 2001 2.0L 4 Cylinder Engine 87,000 miles and I've been having this weird whining noise in my engine when I drive and Was wondering if I could get some feedback on what the problem might be.
  • The whining noise sounds like its coming from my transmission.
  • The noise doesn't appear in the morning until after I drive a little longer when the car is a littler hotter.
  • If I'm driving for a very long time and I completely stop, the car will stutter like it's unable to find the first gear then take off normally with the whining noise.
  • Usually the whinning noise is through 20-40mph but I've noticed it increased to 20-50mph.
  • The whinning noise dissappears after 40-50mph.
If you guys could help me out that would be great. Thanks!

I just test drove a 2002 Jetta with the same problem. It kept me from purchasing it. The car had 84,000 on it. The owner said that it has always whined and it is not a problem. I would like to know what it is also.
