Where to get 2008 Jetta Replacement Key?
Hello everyone,
Just joined the forum. I have a friend who, while on a trip with friends, lost the key to her 2008 Jetta (the one with the FOB/remote on the end of the key) and I was looking for suggestions on the best place to buy a new one. Her dealer wants $250 (she is a college kid, that's a lot to her). I see one on ebay for $40, but it'd still have to be cut and programmed. Anyone have any suggestions on the cheapest way to get a replacement key?
Thank You!
Jeff

Not "new" but "excellent condition.....with a new immobilizer chip installed", so it can be programmed. The sad thing here she got the car used, and only got one key with the car. Now she can't even get in the car (she called the hotel she stayed in, thinking it is lost there behind the bed stand...but no luck yet). I am all for dealers making money, but $500 bucks for a set of keys? Outrageous.
The thing too is, I know a lock smith at a good size shop. But he even told me "We don't even have a machine to cut these new keys....I could not even make a spare key for my own car if I had to". He told me of a place not too far from here that "might" be able to cut the key, but they probably won't be able to program it.
Looks like the car companies want a monopoly on new car keys so they can charge whatever price they want, no matter how outrageous. I told my friend to call every Volkswagon/Audi dealer around to get the best price to cut/program the key I found for her, is $85 or $90 enough Volkswagon for a 15 minute job?? This is a Volkswagon ("peoples car")...not a Lamborghini....

Old thread.
First posts normally go in introductions else you could get a free fix and we never see you again!!!

Before you can programme a key you need to find the Secret Key Code (SKC) of the system. VAG TAC/HO is the only thing that will find it which you can Google. VAG-COM\VCDS will programme it but it needs Secret Key Code (SKC).
