Default Two problems, hope someone can help

Hi there folks,I'm new here and was hoping someone could help me out with two problems. I bought a '95 Jetta for my daughter, but after tons of miles she could not get the concept of the stick,so now I have a new toy. This is problem #1- I start the car and sometimes the heat works sometimes it won't,I turn the switch on an off but nothing, after 10-20 mile it turns on (sometimes).WTF! Problem#2- I disconnected the battery, to look at the heater switch, and when I connected the battery the horn started going, lights started flashing, guess there must be some sort af factory alarm or anti-thieft device. That stopped after I put key in the door, locked ,unlocked, but now the radio won't work, display reads safety. Help out the new guy![:'(]

Shoot man, Electrical is not my cup of tea. But I can say this... Disconnecting the battery resets the radio. Most of the time the radio can be fixed by entering a code or a sequence of button pushing. If you still have the onwers manual you can possiblyget the code in there. Good luck
p.s. It must be a girl thing with the manuals... My girl can't seem to get it either...
