Unhappy trouble with my coolant/transmission fluid

i'm sure i'll kind of sound like an *** trying to explain this, but i'm a girl who really doesn't know much about cars. i think i got the gist of what the mechanic was tellin me but i hate not knowing if i'm being lied to. i guess something broke and i have transmission fluid getting into my coolant. according to him, i need a new cooling component, a new thing that the coolant goes in, and all new piping/tubing/whatever because transmission fluid is corosive and it will eat away at them from the inside? i wish i could explain it better, but does anyone get anything from what i'm saying and have any experience with this situation? any info would seriously help and i would greatly appreciate it. they quoted me about $1300 with labor.
