trouble code 1296

Default trouble code 1296
have a 2000 jetta with code 1296. anyone have the answer?

Cooling system malfunction. I'm new to VW, but I'm going to guess that you need to replace the coolant temperature sensor AND the thermostat. If you let it go, you could break down the plastic impeller in your water pump and end up nuking your engine.
