Default timing chain or belt?

I have an 03 vw jetta gli with the 24v vr6 does it have a timing chain or a timing belt?

well the reason i ask is cause my auto teacher said it was a chain my mechanic said it was a belt, and if you looking in the oil fill opening you can see a chain right there

vr6 is chain it runs on the inner end of the motor between the engine and trans
you need to pull the trans out to do a full timing chain job

so i herd that if u have a timing chain that u shudnt worry about it as much as the belt & that it outlasts the motor. is that true? if not, how often shud u change the chain? (00 jetta glx vr6)

true you can get allot of life out of a chain and you can here them as they get worn
