Default Temperature Sensor

I have a 2000 Jetta. For the past 2 weeks, my temperature sensor light has been blinking at startup. Now it blinks on and off, well into my drive. What could this mean, and should I get it fixed immediately (this is exam week so it is a terrible one to take time to go to the mechanic)?

Thank you!

Default Here is my thoughts

I too have a 2000 Jetta. I had a similar problem a few months back. Here is what I found and wheat I would check.
1. Check the coolant level in the coolant reservoir * - this is to ensure your coolant level is proper.
2. If this is okay, which I am guessing it will be, my thought is a bad temp sending unit. This is a common problem with our Jettas and it cost less than $5.00 at the dealership.
3. This isn't going to keep your Jetta from starting or running but I would encourage you to fix it as soon as you can. It is a very simple fix and needs to be done when the engine is cool. I would ask the dealership to point the temp sending unit out to you so you know where it is located. I believe there are more than one temp sending unit on the Jetta but there is a problematic one and (I believe) it is located on the right side of the engine on the coolant hose leading from the radiator to the engine and is easily reached when your hood is open.

Good luck!

I had the same problem on my daughters 2001 Jetta. It was just low on coolant. Check the coolant reservoir located on the left side of the engine compartment. Its round, check the level of the coolant and make sure it is at the max level mark. If the coolant is low theres a sensor in there that makes the light come on so you'll check it. Good luck. Chris
