Default sudden over heating

I have a 2003 Jetta, about 29000 mi on it. Perfect car up til now. yesterday my daughter got stuck in the snow. a "friend" tried to get her out. now the car is overheating. I get no heat from the heater. I dont see a leak under the hood. though the coolent level was low.

This is my daughters car. I havea BMW the forums for BWMs have bee very helpful. thats way I'm here. I did some preliminary searching. Apparently the water pump is driven by a shaft, not a belt. The symptoms act like the water pump is gone. But would one go at just 29000 mi.? Could the shaft be broken? Is this expensive to repair?BMW has a site called realoem.com. it has all the parts and diagrams on my car. is there a similar site for VWs?

Any help appreciated.
