1997 jetta over heating??
well i am a honda guy but figured i would give the vw name a try, picked up a 97 jetta gls for a pretty good deal 1800,ran fine no problems when i was test driving it or anything.after we signed up a contract and i got it legal the damn thing started to over heat.i noticed that the radiator fan doesnt come on at high temperatures but it does come on when i have the ac on so that is how i have been getting to and from both work and school.
bought a new thermostat and gaskets but can not find where the thermostat housing is hah,any description or pictures would be greatly appreciated.i checked for a bad head gasket and it is not showing the sign.
also could running rich cause the motor to register warm when it is actually at correct temp.im asking that because now i have a damn check engine light(system running to rich) probally just the o2 sensors which i will have changed within a day or so.
anywho if someone could point me out to where the thermostat housing is
thanks

RE: 1997 jetta over heating??
thermostat is on the engine side of the lower rad hose, under the water pump.
if your fan isn't coming on at high temp, there are two possibilities. low coolant (switch not in coolant) or a bad fan switch. there is one in the rad and there may be onein the upper rad hose. hope this helps
