Last week my shifter would not engage gears properly. I have a 2k Jetta GLS 2.0L five speed manual. It started with second and fourth gears, but when I got halfway home after work, none of the gears would engage, including reverse. It feels like there are no gear slots (for lack of a better term). I can spin the shifter in a funnel motion. Is there a guider plate under the console that might have slipped out of place or does this mean my transmission bit it?

 

my '99 wolfsburg is having the same problem with 2nd and 4th. having my mechanic look at it now. if i find out anything, i'll let you know.

 

I had a similar problem with my 97, only had 2nd and 3rd gears. The problem was a linkage that slipped off, 2 minute fix, no parts needed.
