there are a few different ways, just know that behind the VW emblem is an indention, i think they put it there intentionally so the cars would look stupid without the emblem, as for the other two, you can use a heat gun or blow dryer to heat up the adhesive and it will come off much easier, the safest way for your paint is to then run dental floss behind the piece to separate it from the car. You can then use goo gone or something similar to it to remove the excess adhesive.
hope this helps, good luck

I would remove with rubbing alcohol upon heating up with a heat gun on LOW.

Sometimes it looks better w/o the badges, especially with certain body kits. Here shortly I'll be getting rid of the badge on the front and getting the wire mesh grill. Should look great

i ditched the front emblem and the 1.8T and GTI on the rear, anyone who knows a car will see its a VW you shouldnt need big gaudy emblems to show it off, but in my car's case i think it needs the rear VW for looks, unless, like bagel said you have certain body kits.
i hate chrome with a passion so i couldn't keep it that color, i painted it the color of the car,
anyway, its a matter of opinion, some people like em on some dont
