Recently purchased a 2002 Volkswagen golf TDI need to remove the gear **** to change the leather gaitor but i am having major problems. Can anyone help me?

 

there is three main tyoes of gear ****...

1) screw on
2) slide on with set screws (side screws that hold it on to the shift pole)
3) key (at the bottom there will be a snap key thing just pop that out)

if i remeber right it is a screw on type... so twist it around VERY HARD... if not (if you dont need it any more) tap/hit the top of it with a hammer and it will losen it up easly but could break it.
