Default Question about porblem involving fuel pump!

whats up guys,
well i have a 87 jetta 1.8 that i have been working on. it recently had a problem with the battery being drained because of a bad voltage regulator causing the alternator not to charge, i got that all taken care of i believe but now the car will run for a little while fine and then a loud winning noise comes from the rear of the car (probably fuel pump) and then it dies about 3 sec after the noise. might be coincidence but it seems like the car will run for longer when it is cooler outside. just went out to mess with the car today and its about 95 degrees out and the car is only running for about 20 sec before the winning noise and then shutting off. Anyone have any suggestions on what it may be, not trying to put a ton of money into the car considering its only worth a couple hundred dollars and i have heard the fuel pumps for these things are pretty high.

thanks in advance guys,
