Default New Jetta Owner!

Hey all I'm new to theVW world!! I've been drivin the same pos Civic for 7 years and finally graduated.

I just bought a 2004 Jetta GLS, 2.0 liter (normally aspirated) with 25k miles. It's in mint condition and I love it. I do however wanna make it go zoom : ) I have a few questions for you experts out there. NOTE: I am going to invest in a Bentley manual, and im a Certified Aircraft mech...

1. Can I turbo theEngine with a stock VW turbo without making any changes to the engine itself? IE: Different connecting rods, piston rings ect?

2. Do I have to adjust the timing of the engine to turbo it?

3.Do I need to adjust the suspension if I change the wheels to low pro alloys and turbo it?

4. Will a Cold air intakebe an advantage for the turbo/engine or is it just a gimmick?

last but not least... this is a list of the modifications I would like to do to the car, I welcome any criticism, parts recommendations and cautions to take when modifying my new Jetta.

1.Cold Air Intake
2.Turbo
3.Low Pro Tires
4.Tint
5.Stock Spoiler
6.Suspension alteration??

I dont think a OEM turbo will bolt up to a 2.0, The OE turbo motor is a 1.8 and i imagine that being different would mean many other things would be different. Not only that but the turbo on the 1.8T is a tiny tiny little thing that wouldnt help a lot. I bet you could find a 2.0L turbo kit or find a way to make a bigger turbo fit and your car would scream. I dont know whether the stock 2.0 internals could take a ridiculous amount of pressure but im sure you could find this info when digging around for a kit.
The suspension is a choice, people ride all day with stock setups and big wheels with tiny tires, and actually being that the stock setup rides higher and has more give they may be safer with low pros. The lower you go the stiffer shocks and struts you need to keep from bottoming out. the stiffer you suspension, the less forgiving on bumps and potholes. I have 17's with a little meatier tire on my GTI plus i have it dropped an 1 3/4" with a much stiffer setup and several times i could swear i blew out a tire but still nothing. Its just a little more rough. I prefer the stiffer ride, it feels nice on good roads and the car doesn't have the body roll anymore. I feel like it handles much better, anyway, not trying to sell a suspension to you or anything, its just basically my favorite mod i have done to my car thus far. Totally a personal choice, you can ride bigger wheels with low pros on sotcker sups. or slam it as long as you leave room for wheels in there.
Cold air intakes work to an extent. Yes you can get cooler air to the turbo faster, but you can only push so much into the turbo at a time. many say that the cooler air doesn't matter because the turbo is so hot that is doesnt make a difference. Here is a thread for the set up on my car, works wonders for throttle response and i believe freed up a little HP:

Many claim it to be just as good as your everyday CAIs and i believe it. plus its cheaper, slap in a K&N and its good to go. The stock intake passage is extremely restrictive so by doing this you are giving the car instant access to a lot more air.
Good luck man, hope this helps

Thanks man!I appreciate the input.

See whatI ultimately want out of the car is Really good acceleration and Responsive handling i fugure while the ride may suffer if i lower the suspension and tighten it up but it wouldbe safer for me to have if im driving at high speeds on surface streets. I would have to watch out for potholes and such but i have very good eyes and fast reflexes so i dont think it would be a problem. I just dont want to damage the engine or the frame with my modifications. I would like it if somone who owns a Jetta and has done similar modifications could give me some suggestions on what to do first and what parts manufacturers are the best. Thanks -Culturelagg

Bagel has a modded jetta along with a few others on here,
if you want handling suspension, sways and braces should probably be on your list. but yes potholes and bumps are definitely the enemy, im learning a lot more about the streets around where i live than i ever wanted to know.

turbos are fine as long you run the recommended pressures....running a 2.0 is prolly not a good idea at 20psi....BUT you could run that if you had forged internals, port and polished heads, and a good intercooler and bigger fuel injectors.

Right, but there are people who squeeze most amount of psi and blow it up. They don't realize you need stronger internals to handle the HP going through the block.
