Default New alternator for 2001 1.8T

Ok, so I bought a 2001 1.8T Wolfsburg edition for my son. Its a 5 speed manual. Within a month I had to replace the battery. No issues after that. However, this past Tuesday him and I were in the car when all the small dash indicator lights came on. Next the radio dimmed and died, slowly. None of the gauges were working, speedometer... nothing. As we were slowing down.. the gas pedal completely stopped working and the car died. When he tried to restart, it clicked like a dead battery. We towed it to the bodyshop which has informed me that its a bad alternator. Here's my dilemma. He told me that it could be either the small alternator costing around $297 or the large one, costing approx $452. This is without labor. Without getting into the engine yet, he is speculating it will be the larger one since the car is a turbo. When I look at parts online, I dont see any that cost over $210. Am I totally getting screwed here? How do I tell which alternator this car really needs? HELP!

you probably arent getting screwed, but what id suggest, is if you think you can do it yourself, do some mor eresearch on vwvrotex and see what youve got going on. Look into getting a bentley manual as well....dont go with anything other than a bentley though...its paper gold, everything else is just crap
