Default need suggestions on 2000 Jetta auto. trans problem

I just purchased a 00' Jetta GLS 2.0 with an automatic tranny issue from an auction fairly cheap. Basically,on the windshield was written "needs transmission,1st and 2nd gear only". This is true but it does have reverse though too. After getting car home my boyfriend probably wanted to secretly choke me because nobody is willing to work on VW tranny around town so he most likely is gonna have to take it to Columbus and spend a small fortune. My whole point of this story is Im hoping there could be something else that could be causing this issue. Could it be like the torque converter or something (I read that on a different posting), or is it mostly likely that the trannys out? I would greatly appreciate any suggestions...[&o]

I agree. Flush the tranny, change filter, put new fluid in there and run it. If the problem is still there, then new tranny, maybe. You could try and rebuild it which sometimes is cheaper than buying a brand new one. ALso check junk yards in the area, you can find pretty good items.
