Cool Need opinion on bad key switch...

We have a 1997 Jetta GL 5speed... the key switch has been giving us problems...
lights, wipers, and blower intermittently work... giggle the key and find that sweet spot and there you go!

So sometimes we have had to hold the key in the 'start' position while driving because the lights go out and we cant get them to stay on... now my poor car has DIED!

She just cranks without starting.

My question to ya'all:
does the electrical continue to send spark to the rotor therefore burning it out over time... or is the electrical disengaged like the starter from the clutch switch??
Could this be why my car will not start?

My husband is working a lot and cannot work on it at the moment... but he did take the timing chain cover off and it appeared to be fine.. and there was tension... so we are thinking that is ok.

Any suggestions??
Thanks all... jj
