Unless you're parked on bare ice, it sounds like you need a clutch.
You may get lucky and the cable is out of adjustment- A3 cars have a goofy self adjuster style cable that I've seen act up; try having that checked, but I doubt it. Sounds like the clutch disc is worn/burnt out and you need a clutch job.
