need help for 1996 Jetta

need help for 1996 Jetta
The engine check light of my 96 Jetta was on. I went to Autozone and they found the error code were P0170 and P0440. I plan to check those problems by myself first, but I do not know how to check them. Could someone give me a hand? Your help will be greatly appreciated!
