New here and hope someone can help with my problem.
Car has 189K miles and runs great still but the speedo will work and then go out and then come back on and then go out etc.
First off I bought a new speed sensor for the 5spd trans. and still has issues. Then I just bought a used speedo cluster w/ 75K and I still am having the same problem. Some times if you hit the top of the dash the speedo will work but not all the time will this method work. That's why I thought it may have been the cluster. I'm now thinking it may be down to a ground issue but don't you think I would be having problems with all the other gauges going on and off. Maybe a broken wire? maybe something in the trans. itself?

the spedometer attaches directly into the transmission and has a small bolt holding the unit in place... i would suppose that if it is loose it could still work sometimes. the bolt could prevent it from completely not working... if it works sometimes when you hit it it could definetly be a wiring problem, maybe in the harnes that plugs into the back of the cluster, maybe a loose pin in the factory harness
