Jetta/Golf engine swap

Are the Golf and Jetta 1.8 turbo and tranny one in the same? Can I swap them? Any mods needed for it?

good question i do believe the gli engines are the same make sure they have the same engine code with is located on the timing cover and it should be a pretty easy swap...
