Default first jetta

Hey everyone this is my first port. I just got a 2003 jetta 2.0 5 speed with just under 100,000 miles. I have done some reading on forums. I know the water pump and timing belt often go bad. How can i tell if they have been replacest or if there is anything else that i have to look out for. Also my engine light is on and the place i got it from said it was a o2 sensor. Is there any comin sensors that go bad? Any comments to help me out will be nice.

Usually a bad water pump, starts to leak from the weep hole and that means is time to replace. For the timing belt, you can do a visual inspection while the engine is not running. Look for cracks... O2 sensors go bad around that mileage, But did that person told you which O2 sensor was it? There are two.

The guy never told me what O2 sensor. I was going to get it scaned somewhere local. I would do the work myself. Like i said this is my first jetta and dont really have a clue about the car. I want to get on some forums and see if I was going to open a can of worms that I couldnt handle. Thanks for the info.

Oreilly or Napa can scan it for free. If you get the code, I can help you figure out which one is it.

I just recently bought a '99 Jetta with 94k miles on it. A month or so after buying it my check engine light came on and it read "P0410" which is the secondary air injection sensor. I have yet to find out what exactly this is and what exactly needs to be fixed but if you find out any information about your 02 sensor, I would greatly appreciate the help!

I took my jetta to an auto shop and they told me that it was the secondary air injection valve so I'll be getting that fixed tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to finally get my check engine light to go off now.
