Default Engine light on

Hey, what's the deal with the engine light on Jettas? I bought my '01 last year and it came on shortly there after, it's been on ever since. My mechanic here in NYC says there's nothing wrong that it's a VW problem. I've started to check around the web at various VW friendly sites and I notice this is a wide spread issue. Now it's a big problem 'cause I can't get through NY emmisions tests and it's starting to look expensive. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First, get a new mechanic. Then go get a DTC scanner for $60. I'm sure it's an O2 sensor.

it is on for a problem not to just open the hood to see if the engine is still there. like racer said get someone that knows what they are doing or get the code numbers from him and post them here and we can help

not that i think its the same problum but every time it rains an i hit a puddel the air pump picks up water and it gets into the sensor and throws a code.
